In early April, I booked a one-way ticket to St. Thomas from Providence, Rhode Island in order to join my friend Captain Phillip Gutowski and his First Mate Lexi Ossinger on a sailing adventure from St. Thomas, through Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, up to Boston, with stops in Florida and New York City along the way.

In this installment in our ongoing series of conversations, the fun of island-hopping in the Caribbean comes to an end as the crew of Eclipse changes course, deciding after much thought to embark on a longer passage than previously planned. Such a sudden shift causes excitement from the crew, and a bit of tense trepidation from your host, as open water sailing is, by nature, a dangerous way of travel.

As the crew prepares to embark, thoughts are collected, and hurriedly sent out, just in case this is the last time they ever see land:
