Laugh all you want, but Vox hiring a Snapchat Senior Editor is brilliant
Vox has only been around a few years, but they’ve already made a huge impact in how news is presented and consumed online, and by staying ahead of the curve when it comes to emerging technologies and platforms, they’ve been able to leapfrog some of the more traditional news media stalwarts.
But, nevertheless, it still feels kind of silly to see that they’re in the market for not just one, but three professional Snapchatters…
Silly like a fox.
Did you know there were 100 million daily active users on Snapchat? And that they’re sending over 400 million snaps per day? 71% of their users are in the highly covetable 34-and-under demographic too. And they’re not just sending nudie photos that will one day come back to haunt them.
Stories, the feature that allows users to create compilations of snaps that last 24 hours, has been wildly successful, and Our Stories, a curated channel of user submitted photos and videos, sees views in the tens of millions.
There’s a lot of getting there to get got, you know what I’m sayin’?
If Ezra Klein and company are going to keep their march to the Media Iron Throne on pace, it only makes sense to go head-on into this vast untapped marketplace. Hell, if Random Nerds had the money, I’d do the same thing. 11% of people admit to checking Snapchat even while driving, which means they love it so much they are willing to risk death to quell their forever empty# with a little snapping. If you could fill that void with explainer news instead of a bunch of pretty people listening to EDM, why not go for it?
And if you can avoid having to read a bunch of formulaic cover letters while also making your applicants apply their knowledge and creativity, even better…
